Novaset water-based coatings for offset printing

Compare Novaset water-based offset coatings by surface effect, substrate and subsequent processing. Choose the required gloss, matt or special finish. Check the application conditions for the selected coating.

How to choose water-based varnishes for the order?

Start with the function that the finished print is to fulfill. Then specify the substrate, one or two painted sides and the conditions of use. Gloss will not replace a barrier, and low migration will not replace proper selection for contact with food.

Check the compatibility of the ink with process inks or inks according to the Pantone scale. For Novaset varnishes, choose inks suitable for varnishing, with appropriate resistance to alcohol and alkalis. Before applying, perform a test on the target substrate.

How to read parameters? Viscosity is given in seconds for a DIN 4 mm cup at 20°C. Application means the weight of the wet varnish layer in g/m². These are data from technical data sheets, not one universal machine setting. When selecting a specific batch, confirm the current specification.

Gloss and print protection

Glossy water-based varnishes: GLOSS and HIGH GLOSS

Highlight the color and protect the surface against abrasion. Select a gloss for a given paper and varnishing method. The ECO series focuses on economical use, and the HIGH GLOSS and INULINE variants focus on a stronger visual effect.

What do you get?

Compare gloss effect and print protection. When painting both sides, check the permissible variant and test it on the target substrate.

What should you look out for?

Not every gloss varnish is suitable for both sides. You can use INULINE for commercial work and non-food packaging. Don’t automatically attribute low migration properties to it.

Surface effect adapted to the design

Matt, satin and Soft Touch

Choose from a calm look or a velvety feel. ECO NEUTRAL reduces shine, SILK MATT gives a satin effect, and MATT has a distinct matte effect. SOFT TOUCH adds a soft surface to packaging and commercial printing.

What do you get?

Reach for the PREMIUM series when, in addition to the appearance, you need quick drying and high abrasion resistance. ECO allows you to choose a neutral, satin or matte effect for everyday work.

What should you look out for?

Soft Touch does not replace any matte varnish. Check the surface feel on the sample. When painting on both sides, confirm the effect and behavior of the stack before the entire application.

Sheet and package behavior

HIGH SLIP and ANTI SLIP: slip control

Adjust surface friction for further processing and transportation. HIGH SLIP increases glide. ANTI SLIP limits slipping. Choose the effect consciously, instead of just the shine.

What do you get?

Water-based varnishes from this group combine slip control with surface protection. You can choose gloss or matte, depending on your design and production needs.

What should you look out for?

Do not select HIGH SLIP if the job requires more friction. Confirm the behavior of the finished packaging during gluing, stacking and transportation. The result depends on the entire process.

On your phone, swipe the table sideways to see all the columns.

Variant When to choose? Viscosity and application Technical data sheet
Novaset® 4214/40 HIGH SLIP Glossy variant with very high slip and good print protection. 40 s; 3–6 g/m² PDF, ENG →

Selection for a specific packaging function

Water-based varnishes for packaging: DFC, barrier, temperature and IML

Select the varnish according to the conditions of use of the finished packaging. You will choose a different variant for food contact, another for IML labels. Temporary barrier and temperature resistance also require separate selection.

What do you get?

DFC designates variants for specific direct food contact. TEMP RST responds to temperature requirements, and IML helps in further label processing.

What should you look out for?

Low migration does not automatically mean allowing direct contact with all foods. Check the type of food, contact time and temperature, and documentation of the finished packaging. Barrier varnish provides a temporary barrier, not permanent insulation.

On your phone, swipe the table sideways to see all the columns.

Variant When to choose? Viscosity and application Technical data sheet
Novaset® 4101/40 HIGH GLOSS DFC Very high gloss. Direct contact with dry, non-greasy food. One-sided. 40 s; 3–6 g/m² PDF, ENG →

Surface preparation for further finishing

Water-based primers for UV varnishing and lamination

Provide a suitable layer for further surface treatment. Select an offline primer for a separate varnishing or laminating step. Select inline primer for a machine with a double painting unit.

What do you get?

OFF PRIMER GLOSS and OFF PRIMER MATT create a water-based primer that improves adhesion during subsequent UV varnishing or foil lamination. You can choose gloss or matte.

What should you look out for?

The water primer does not replace the final UV layer. 4520/50 IN PRIMER GLOSS requires an appropriate UV varnish and a double varnishing unit. Before production, check the adhesion of the entire system.

On your phone, swipe the table sideways to see all the columns.

Variant When to choose? Viscosity and application Technical data sheet

Storage, use and washing

Stir the varnish thoroughly before use. Protect it from frost, overheating and direct sun. Store the described varnishes in their original packaging at a temperature of 5-30°C. When drying, control the circulation of warm air and the temperature of the stack. Simply increasing the IR power may worsen the result.

After work, wash the painting unit immediately according to the instructions for the machine and ink. Discuss the selection of auxiliary agents with us or check VARN chemicals for print shops.

Selection questions and practical limits

Is a glossy coating suitable for every substrate and finishing process?

No. Besides gloss, check substrate absorption, ink compatibility and subsequent gluing, lamination or foil application. Also confirm the application method. Test the chosen coating on the actual job before production.

How should I compare the cost of water-based coatings?

Compare consumption at the required finish, application conditions and drying demands. Also include rejects and any extra finishing steps. The price per kilogram alone cannot show the cost of a finished sheet.
