Ink chalking: why does pigment rub off?

← Printing lexicon

Ink chalking describes weak pigment binding on the printed surface. A dry coloured trace can appear during rubbing. Compare this symptom with drying and mechanical resistance problems before choosing an action.

How to recognize ink chalking?

Compare the prints under the same conditions and check the rub resistance after an appropriate period of time. Notice whether the surface smears or gives off dry pigment. Save samples to compare the effect after subsequent steps.

The colored mark itself does not provide a certain diagnosis. Problems with drying or mechanical resistance may be similar. Record the moment of inspection and test conditions.

Why does ink chalk?

If liquid ink components penetrate the substrate too quickly, too little binder may remain around the pigment. Ink and paper selection therefore matter. Basis weight alone does not describe substrate absorbency.

Check whether you changed the paper, paper batch or printed side. Also check whether any additives changed the ink properties. Do not attribute every defect to the ink alone.

Chalking vs. Not Drying – What’s the Difference?

Symptom What might that suggest?
The dry pigment comes off easily when rubbed. Poor pigment binding, including possibility of chalking.
The layer smears or transfers to an adjacent sheet. Fixing or drying problem; further inspection needed.

This table helps you choose your checking direction. It does not replace the evaluation of samples and information about the materials used.

What to check in a print shop?

Prepare a sample of unprinted paper and a print. Provide the name of the ink, additives and the time from printing to inspection. Compare the defective print run with the last correct order.

If you have problems with drying, use the guide offset ink does not dry. Don’t add the dryer automatically: poor pigment binding and too slow drying require different decisions.

Will varnish solve chalking ink?

Do not treat ink as a way to hide an unrecognized defect. First check the reason and compatibility of the material set. Evaluate any protective coating in a test of the entire process.

At WIT, we will help you choose offset ink to the ground. Send samples and write what resistance the finished print should achieve.
